In 1945 a Costa Rican farmer from the village of Venado fell into a hole and discovered what is now known as the Venado Caverns.   Originally discovered by Guatuzos aborigines, the caves date back between 15 and 20 million years to the Miocene period. For millions of years they were hidden away under the ocean, but surfaced because of tectonic movement.  There is now a series of eight different chambers open to the public which extend under ground for about a mile and half.

The caves are primarily composed of limestone, stalagmites, stalactites and corals.  An underground river is responsible for many of the interesting rock formations that can be seen.   Marine fossils are found nearly everywhere, as are numerous bats and small colorless frogs.  There is also a “shrine” with a seriously creepy glow that is of much interest.

Visiting Venado Caverns is not for the squeamish.  The caves can become quite claustrophobic and there are times when you will need to be on your hands and knees to climb through the tiny tunnels.  True exploration of the caves requires that you hike through the underground river with depths ranging from ankle to knee deep in places.  It is suggested that you bring a change of clothing and there are changing room available.  You can rent rubber boots, flashlights and lighted helmets for a reasonable fee at the cave entrance.  Tours are available that run around an hour and a half.

This is a challenging intermediate ride along the southern shore of Lake Arenal.  You’ll bike through the rainforest and enjoy awesome views of Arenal Volcano and its lake.  This is an out and back ride starting by Arenal Volcano National Park.  You’ll bike on the  gravel road along the south shore of Lake Arenal,  famous for the abundant wildlife and stunning scenery.  After crossing the Caño Negro river we’ll ride on the abandoned road around the lake crossing a few streams and passing by small family farms and areas of protected forest.  On the way back we’ll stop in the village of El Castillo for a delicious “casado” lunch.  After lunch we have the option of riding the old dirt road all the way back to Arenal Dam. This ride takes us on an old road connecting Arenal Dam with the main entrance to Arenal Volcano National Park.  From there we go towards the village of El Castillo, biking on a quiet lane surrounded by dense forest and cattle farms. Along the ride we see howling monkeys, coatis, and birds like toucans, egrets and king fishers.  We’ll stop for a picnic on the shore of Lake Arenal where it’s possible to swim.  The volcano is visible during all of the ride and we can usually hear its activity while we bike. The Sky Tram™  a unique experience, safe for all ages! You will fly quietly through the rainforest on a gondola that offers spectacular views of the Arenal lake and the area in general.  You’ll be accompanied by an expert Costa Rican naturalist guide on this  30 minutes ride on the Sky Tram cableway.

The gondola will provide different perspective of the flora and fauna found in the rainforest canopy. The Sky tram ends in a wide observation platform on the highest point of the Arenal Reserve, where you can sit down on comfortable chairs to enjoy the view.

This private reserve is the best example of primary forest we can visit in the vicinity of Arenal Volcano, only 5 minutes from La Fortuna.  Owned by the Association of Neighbors from the nearby village of El Bosque, this land was almost lost when squatters illegally tried to turn it into a banana plantation a decade ago.  Today it preserves over 300 hectares of forest where we can find many 50 meter high Ceiba (Ceiba pentandra) and Javillo (Hura crepitans) trees as well as other species of endangered hardwood trees. We hike on a narrow but well maintained trail that starts on the flat land but soon ascends to the area where the oldest trees are found.  We’ll need to cross a small stream twice before looping back to the trail head.On this tour we’ll appreciate what an old undisturbed forest looks like and we’ll learn about the balance of life found in it. Intense hike to the top of Cerro Chato, a dormant volcano located right next to Arenal, whose crater is now a beautiful lake surrounded by forest.  We start hiking through the Arenal Observatory Lode grounds to the base of the mountain and then ascend on a trail through lush rainforest all the way up to the crater rim. We hike down the opposite side of the mountain, enjoying great vistas of the flatlands in front of us until we reach the magnificent Fortuna Waterfall.  Here we continue hiking all the way down to the base of the falls where can go for a swim in the river.
